about

Moody alt-folk confessional “Once Again'' places ilonalowe’s accomplished storytelling and unique vocal delivery front-and-centre. The new single is a dark and deeply personal account of falling into old, self-destructive comforts at the expense of neglecting one’s own wellbeing. “Once Again” is rich and characterful in its sound, despite having been written, recorded and produced from ilonalowe’s home studio in South West London.

“The third-party in a relationship isn’t always a person. In any of my relationships - friendships included - I have a tendency to lean into insecurities, and it becomes this third invisible entity that gets in the way. I just wanted to personify the way that I give in to what’s not good for me and become neglectful of my relationships, much like an unfaithful partner would.” - ilonalowe

As a result of UK Covid lockdown, ilonalowe has also self-produced and directed the music video for “Once Again” (due for release on 30th April) and hand-printed a dramatic linocut self-portrait as the official artwork from the safety of her own flat.

lyrics

Everybody's got their line
Tell me yours, I'll tell you mine
He gave me something new to get me through the night
A bleary-eyed deep sleep

He and I could have spoke for years
Neither I nor he could see for tears
And in that gaudy basement flat, let free our greatest fears

And the secrets I told to his ear
And the way he clung to me so dear
What a hateful way to make you feel
I'd do it once again

Cold and harsh like winter air
How could I forget that glare
From yours to mine, a steely gaze, fortunes I couldn't tell

But I wore his hand around my neck
And he lit another cigarette
It's the smoking part that I regret
But I'd do it once again

I told him about an ex-housemate
whose father passed away
I told him about your mother's friend
whose husband wouldn't stay
He told me how his cousin dearest
Faught and lost their leg
It's all misread palms, little lovelines, bitter pills

What business have I in the bed you left without a trace?
So I woke up to a different face
He said you and I have got it made
He said he's made a grave mistake
But I'd do it once again
